The environment in which organizations operate is constantly changing. In order to better equip Canadian small and medium organizations (SMOs) working in international cooperation, Spur Change and the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC), in collaboration with Aléas, is offering a Risk Management Training series.

As leaders in the field of travel risk management, Aléas will share good practices with organizations to better equip themselves with the means and procedures to identify, analyze and deal with travel-related risks. That being said, all of the elements discussed throughout the zoom and self-paced learning portions will be applicable to an organization's broader risk taxonomy. The homework and discussions will address other categories such as reputational, financial, and IT risks. Thus, all organizations will find the right fit during the training as we take a comprehensive look at organizational risk management.

Objectives of training:

> Draft an overview of the organization's practices related to travel crisis management.

> Identify the priorities to address and manage situations effectively.

> Improve organizational capacities to:

• Identify, analyze and implement travel risks with appropriate mitigation measures,
• Develop diligent partnerships,
• Make informed decisions based on the organization’s risk threshold,
• Understand scenario-based planning and use it to develop contingency plans.

> Improve risk management practices keeping personnel safe, secure, and healthy when abroad.

Training Modules:

November 2nd - Module 1 Travel Risk Management: Understand organizational risks of sending people overseas. Introduction to the legal and normative frameworks. Begin the assessment of crisis management practices.

November 9th - Module 2 Risk Analysis: Learn how to perform a risk analysis and determine mitigation strategies to implement and meet the organization’s risk threshold. Introduction to scenario-based planning.

November 15th - Module 3 Effective Crisis Management: Improve crisis management practices by implementing protocols and using standard operating procedures. Use scenario-based planning to gain organizational resilience and develop appropriate contingency plans.

Commitment and Learning Methods

An educational activity facilitating the integration of knowledge is offered in each module and is a prerequisite for the live sessions. Participants will receive asynchronous materials associated with each module a few days before joining the live sessions through Aléas Campus, an online learning management system. Confirmed participants should, therefore, expect to perform work beyond asynchronous and synchronous sessions. The rigor of this involvement will determine the level of integration of the knowledge and skills taught (between 10 and 20 hours).

Selection Criteria

• There is a maximum of 25 spots available for this training with a maximum of three participants from the same organization able to register. We hope to leave room for as many different organizations as we can.
• Organizations that meet Global Affairs Canada’s criteria as an eligible small or medium organization (SMO) working in the international cooperation sector will be given preference over other organizations. This training is tailored to the international cooperation sector but others interested in risk management are welcome to attend should space allow.
• Alberta-based organizations will be given preference. Participants from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and Northwest Territories are welcome to register should space allow. Please contact Nicolas at nicolas.pena@acgc.ca right away if you are interested in participating.

• You are willing to commit around 10+ hours over 3 weeks (1 hour for pre-reading material each week and 1.5 hours for each of the three Zoom sessions + additional homework time) for this training. Online material will be available on October 27th, 2023 at Aléas Campus.

About the facilitator:

Marie-Claude (MC) founded Aléas by combining her passion for international travels, her creativity and her thirst for developing new projects.

MC has 15 years of experience in decision-making positions. She has forged her expertise by working in the fields of international logistics, program development and risk management. Her experience, tinged with international cooperation and solidarity, allows her to lead her team towards achieving results and guaranteeing outstanding service to her clients.

About the Spur Change program:

The Spur Change program focuses on supporting Canadian small and medium organizations (SMOs) to deliver sustainable results in support of the Feminist International Assistance Policy and the Sustainable Development Goals. As a program of the Inter-Council Network, we work with regional councils (such as ACGC for this training) to deliver tailored capacity-building opportunities to SMOs from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
