Learning Series: Session 2 - Decolonial Approaches to Public Engagement and Global Citizenship Education

Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2025

Time: 1:00 - 3:00 PM EST

Location: Online, via Zoom

About the session

Decolonial approaches challenge the enduring legacies of colonialism, particularly the unequal power dynamics that shape the international cooperation sector and disadvantage historically marginalized communities. This session explores how organizations can shift from top-down, paternalistic models of engagement and global citizenship education to ones that are collaborative, locally led, and rooted in the lived experiences of communities. The goal is to promote a deeper understanding of power and how colonial structures continue to shape the sector, including engagement practices, frameworks and policies.

Objectives
The session aims to:

  • Reflect on how coloniality continues to shape international cooperation, engagement and global citizenship education.
  • Critically examine how organizational structures, frameworks, and policies may reproduce colonial practices.
  • Explore how decolonial principles might inform approaches that are collaborative and grounded in the lived realities of communities.
