Bringing the voices of Southern leaders to the Canadian public
Throughout the program, Spur Change will be supporting a development leader from the Global South in engaging communities across Canada through various public engagement initiatives, through a Southern Speaker Annual Tour. Thus, Spur Change aims to provide opportunities for Canadian Small and Medium Organizations (SMOs) and communities to learn and exchange knowledge with each other and with Southern partners on good development practices, while ensuring that voices of local SMOs are heard in Canada. As part of this tour, each Southern leader will also be invited to participate in the Spur Change Annual Conference.
A central focus on learning, knowledge translation, and knowledge sharing will ensure the best practices and lessons learned will continue to be shared, building the capacity of SMOs to implement effective development work, empowering women and girls, and reducing poverty globally.

Lawyer dedicated to the promotion and defense of human rights since the 80s and witness of multiple violations of human rights in girls, young people, adults, especially women surviving in devastating conditions of their human dignity by cutting off their enjoyment of their fundamental rights as a person. My heart and eyes have been opened before the psychosocial-cultural, political-economic fabric; that decides such inequality among human beings; perverse tissue, but being woven, can be frayed and rewoven without perversity.
Spur Change, in collaboration with CAUSE Canada and the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work is pleased to host a keynote address by Rita Romero, human rights lawyer and gender advisor for CAUSE Canada in Honduras. Join us for Rita’s keynote address, “We Have Worth: Human Rights Advocacy for Marginalized Groups” from 6:00-7:30 pm on March 23rd at the University of Calgary Senate Room. Rita will speak about her experiences as a witness to the devastating conditions that Hondurans have faced in recent years. She will also speak about her work as an advocate and defender of human rights in Honduras, particularly for women, LGTBQ groups, and individuals living in rural communities.
