Spur Change's Impact

The Spur Change program began on February 26, 2019 and it is now starting year six of its programming schedule. Throughout this past year (April 2023 - March 2024), the team worked to reach a total of 190 SMOs, for a total of 465 unique SMOs since the beginning of the program. In addition to these SMOs, in Y5 17 international organizations were reached as well as 35 other organizations within the sector not falling into the classification of SMO. The team continued making new trainings and tools available on the Resource Library (with 401 resources now available), designed innovative learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of SMOs, continued promoting the self-paced RBM 101 course, and re-offered past trainings such as RBM 201, Project Design and Implementation, and the Risk Management Training to support SMOs. Moreover, during this fifth year, the program team and its implementing partners continued to test innovative formats and approaches to offer flexible and responsive programming to support SMOs, youth and educators. Through a decentralized approach, the Spur Change program significantly increased its reach to new educators and SMOs by supporting educators and SMO-led initiatives from coast to coast to coast.

Below, explore interviews and stories of change showcasing the impact of the program.

Stories of Change

  • BC SMO Gets Approved for FIT Funding After Improving their Skills with Spur Change RBM Workshops

“We are working on our [Global Affairs Canada] Development Impact Window proposal now as part of our consortium and we are able to provide more knowledge input. Today we recommended to the group that we include the RBM training created by Spur Change for local partners as part of the project, and the idea was embraced.”

  • Ontario SMO Strengthened their Health, Safety, and Security Policies Through Spur Change Training for a More Sustainable Implementation of their Project in Uganda

“We want to thank Spur Change for the three excellent sessions (on Risk Analysis and Contingency Plans) through the spring and early summer. (…) We made the most of your support and guidance, and we feel that we are in a much better position for meeting the health, safety, and security needs of our staff and volunteers who travel and work outside of Canada. Our work is not yet finished – the task is certainly huge – but we have made an excellent start.”

  • New Collaboration Between Four SMOs Working in Ethiopia Emerged from the Spur Change Community of Learning

“Some moments we couldn’t get in touch with our partners due to the conflict (in Ethiopia) so it was great to hear about others’ experience, how it affects their planning for the future, if we need to relocate our project, etc.”

  • New Collaboration Between Four SMOs Working in Ethiopia Emerged from the Spur Change Community of Learning

“One thing I’ve learned is that if I don’t have a resource or don’t have an answer, I have a group of people that I can reach out to when it comes to asking for help. For example, someone shared their baseline template and contract which was incredibly helpful”
