Description

Take Back the Alphonso Mango*

Re-framing Social Studies Education in Canada

Da Kų Cultural Centre, Haines Junction, Yukon

The traditional territory of the Champagne + Aishihik First Nations*

Our Offering

While recognizing the complexity of our histories and present-day  realities, we will work together to disentangle and reframe current  thinking and approaches to social studies education. We will  discuss the colonial ideologies and practices that have shaped  educational systems, content, and pedagogies. We will provide a  firm foundation to engage with and de-center Eurocentric  frameworks while also exploring perspectives, theories, and  cultural content from different regions and communities  worldwide.

A gathering for SSENC members to explore and deconstruct the  underlying tenets, beliefs and values that influence social studies  education in Canada. Educators are deeply committed to uplifting diverse perspectives  in their classrooms. They engage critically with their teaching materials and resources to decolonize - from auditing curricula  through a lens of inclusivity to selecting materials that resist dominant narratives. However, the Eurocentric worldview and  perspective and the imposition of Eurocentric language, ideas, and  beliefs are significant barriers to establishing an inclusive learning  environment. What has shaped the dominant worldview embedded in our education system? Critical, controversial, and  complex aspects of global knowledge are often absent in the school  curriculum. How can we prepare students to navigate and better  understand a globalized world with integrity, authenticity, and  curiosity?
